In 2017, in Cannes, as part of the competition, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s work “Flesh and Sand” was presented at the intersection of reality and virtuality. Guests of the show were taken to a special pavilion with real sand, where they were immersed in Iñárritu’s work. Recognized for his innovative vision, Iñárritu received a special Oscar for the project and continues to be a prominent figure at the Cannes Film Festival (even serving as jury president in 2019).

Supported by the CNC (French National Film Centre), the competition will feature immersive, participatory and interactive works that use virtual reality, augmented reality and other cutting-edge technologies to go beyond traditional storytelling and transport audiences to other worlds and eras. The Directorate of the Cannes Film Festival plans to select 8 immersive works by a competent jury. The works will be shown in the huge Cannes Cineum in Cannes La Bocca. The winner will be awarded a special film screening award.

Cannes Film Festival Directors: “This new program aims to position Cannes as a global center for immersive creativity and the emerging industry of artificial intelligence (AI).”
