Catherine Deneuve in the film "Truth" at the Venice Film Festival
The career of famous actress Fabienne (Catherine Deneuve) is coming to an end. She starred in films of her young fans-directors. Filming does not bring her satisfaction. Meanwhile, throughout her career she followed the credo: “It’s better to be a bad mother and a disgusting friend, but a good actress.” She seems to have sacrificed family values and human interaction for the sake of art. Or she played both in films and in life. She verbally doubles the circulation of her book of memories. After reading her mother's memoirs, her daughter (Juliette Binoche) reproaches her for lying. In reality, the described episodes never happened. She never picked up her daughter from school, they never returned home arm in arm. The actress mother considers the book of life, which she herself created in her own imagination, to be a fictional story, and not a historical memoir. Where is the lie and where is the truth, no one will know except relatives. However, not all of them are worthy of mention in the book.
Fabienne's colleague and talented competitor Sarah was caring for Fabienne's daughter. Professional competition entered personal life. The Iron Lady of cinema, Fabienne, is ready to do anything to win back not only roles, but the attention of her own daughter. She is always a winner and will never become a victim. Sarah passed away. But her presence still invisibly changes Fabienne’s family. Like in a fairy tale, in the end no one dies, but a happy ending awaited us. What would happen in life?
"The Truth" is an upcoming drama film by Hirokazu Kore-eda.
